With the 2012-2013 theater season just around the corner, I decided to share some of my favorite shows and performances from the last season here in Detroit. And, what a magnificent season it was!
My favorite performance this season goes to Dave Toomey in "Cyrano" at Wayne State's Hilberry Theatre. (Check out my review here: http://www.theoaklandpress.com/articles/2012/01/26/entertainment/doc4f207610dba94145021419.txt ) I wasn't necessarily impressed by the production itself, but Mr. Toomey is a delight to watch. His energy and raw talent made the show. He is definitely one of the most entertaining artists here in the city and I am excited to see where he performs next.
I did not review this show, but it was my absolute favorite overall production, "Carmina Burana", with "The Medium" infused in there. Michigan Opera Theatre stepped out of the box and presented theater nirvana with this show. The acrobatics, the singing, the colors...It was pure bliss and I must say that I am actually happy I didn't review this show because the experience is hard to put into words. Wonderful!
My favorite comedy came early in the season with "Silent Night of the Lambs." What a laugh riot?! (My review: ( http://www.theoaklandpress.com/articles/2011/11/30/entertainment/doc4ed501ff80a30457710533.txt?viewmode=fullstory )
"The Altruists" was a nice surprise for me. I went into the show without any expectations or familiarity with the show and walked out with an aching belly, from laughing, and it was also rather enlightening and heartfelt. (Here is my review for the show: http://www.theoaklandpress.com/articles/2012/05/11/entertainment/doc4fad3dde32673869647063.txt )
There were other wonderful shows from the season like "WICKED" at The Fisher Theatre and Michigan Opera Theatre's "Pearl Fishers."
It was quite a season. There were some misses, you can read about those in the left margin as well, but there were more hits!
The 2011-2012 season definitely made me a proud member of the creative community here in Detroit and I can't wait to see what 2012-2013 has in store.
Stay tuned and please feel free to share some of your favorites in the comments section of this blog post.
